Funky Fun Tree for the Holidays

Since when are Christmas Trees funky? Part One Jean here today, threw you off?  I usually post on Sundays but SURPRISE! This project had its challenges.   Not from the Activa product but from me!!   My camera died in the middle of taking photos and I had to stop progress to allow for battery charging! I am here to show you one way to make a Tree using FastMache from Activa Products.   The funky comes in when I paint it, not your Grandma's tree!!! I was so pleasantly surprised to find the Activa product remarkably easy to use.   Just add water and off you go! It is sort of like making pie crust when  you do a slab version like I did.   I have worked with clay (the mud kind) through the years and felt comfortable with this.  It has qualities that differ slightly from mud but overall easy to work with. Living in a very dry Arizona, I found that I had to add a tad more water than the 'recipe' called for.   BUT I was caut...

Hustle Bustle of the Holidays

Have you attended any festive events?   Maybe a work luncheon or a cookie exchange or just good friends have a cup of coffee? It has been a whirlwind at our home and it's not over yet!  I have several groups in which we exchange tokens of our friendship.   This year I made ornaments for gifts.    They were easy and fun, embellishing is the TRICK!   At this time of year anything goes with decorations!   A florist once told me, you can truly get away with TACKY at Christmas!  If it's shiny and bright it's OK. Here are some photos - I started with our Paper Mache Cones and inked the edge with Mementos Love Letter Red  ink. I then used Kaisercraft Mint Twist paper pad to cover the cones. I found the easiest way to create my template was to place the point of the cone at one corner of the paper and rolling it while I made a pencil outline of the shape.  I was able to fit two cones onto each piece of paper.  Since the cones a...

Feature Artist - Martha Walker

Jean here, with a few words.  I am so pleased to feature not only a fantastic artist, but a friend and neighbor.   Martha and I met through a mutual friend who has also appeared on this blog, Ingrid Vient. We are also mutual friends with Carolyn Addie, another Featured artist from our Blog.  I am blessed to be surrounded by so many talented and inspiring people. It brings joy to see their varied creations and enjoy their friendship.  And with that..........Meet Martha..... Martha Walker  owner of Wagons West Designs.   I always enjoyed drawing in grade school, but the thought of becoming an artist as a vocation first popped into my head on a trip to New Orleans in the Fall of my 4th grade year. Around the courtyard of the St. Louis cathedral were artists with their paintings hanging on the wrought iron fence surround. That looked like fun! I proclaimed my newfound goal of becoming an artist to my parents, who took that to heart, and for my...

Hocus-Pocus Candy Cone - Day 21 of the 31 days of Halloween!

The Altered Pages Design Team has been treating us with a  month full of SPOOKY projects!  Be sure to check back each day and see what they create with our partner ArtAnthology's products!  Comment each day on the blog for a chance to win a prize package from ArtAnthology and AlteredPages.com Altered Pages is also one of the 31 Days of Halloween blog hop sponsors. Our Design Team is participating in the hop... if you would like to hop along the blog roll is on the side bar!   I know candy corn is one of those things that you either love it or hate it....personally I love it so I thought it would be fun to make a little cone filled with tricks and treats.... I stared off by painting the mini paper mache cone with Art Anthology's Limeaid adding lots of texture as I applied the paint.    Next I painted several sizes of the Art Anthology Embedibles with Imperial (purple) Dimensional Paint and left them to dry over night.  ...

Halloween is coming....Flaming Sugar Skull

And here's a project to get you in the mood!   Altered Pages has some awesome  Paper Mache products available for Halloween which is where I bought this skull and mask!   To create the skull I started off by painting the entire thing with white acrylic paint.  I then stamped various designs on tissue paper and applied it using  Faber-Castell Gel Medium .    After the glue had dried I sprayed Dylusions Ink over the mask to create a fire-y design.  In some areas I sprayed extra ink, turned the skull upside down and let the drips run towards the top of the skull - drying with a heat tool at the same time.  This helped to "freeze" the drips before they went all the way to the top (bottom).  These drips help create the illusion of fire.   I made the mask in the same basic fashion but I squirted the ink into a small cup and painted it over my stamped design since I wanted to highlight the flower eyes. ...
