Once upon a printed box!

This month we are sharing Altered Box projects. There were so many ideas swirling around in my head, but I decided to use my Gelli Plate to create prints that I would use to cover a previously purchased wooden box.  My color pallete for my prints was inspired by a Mandala Card which was recently given to me. I started my transformation of this box by giving it a good coat of Gesso and once this was dry, I used purple paint to paint around all the edges. Next I took out my Gelli Plate, added a light sandy brown color and covering my plate with this paint color took my first prints.  My second layer was a mix of purple, red and blue paint smeared across the plate using a credit card.  Once I had my plate covered in paint, I added some shapes which were the offcuts left over from a die cut I had been using on a different project. This combination gave my prints a distressed paint look. I then traced around each side of my box on the ...

mixed media articulated art doll

Do you like paper dolls?  I've always been fascinated by them, so the chipboard Art Doll from Gypsy Soul was a perfect excuse to have a little play time.  First, the body received a thin coat of paint, plus some background stamping  with several colors of ink , along with a sp ritz or two o f sp ray inks.   An awl (what I generally refer to as "a pokey tool") was used to stab holes in each limb (that's not something you get to say everyday!) and also at the torso for the joining together of parts, but some free advice:  if you make your own dolly, a small hole punch would probably be an easier option.   Y ou could choose to attach the head the same way, but I glued Ms. Do ll's. As much as I like paper dolls, I equally dislike the little paper tabs generally used to attach their clothes.  Instead, a coating of gel medium over this doll's body parts, as well as over her clothing, will protect Ms. Doll and her collection from me using painter's ta...

Painted Love!

Hi Everyone!  Danie here!  Today I have been playing with a little paint on my Gelli Plate, this time to make my own love inspired backgrounds.  As some of you may know one of the things I love most is to make my own backgrounds/papers so I couldn't resist this with Valentine's Day just around the corner. Wanting a love themed paper I chose to work with a variety of punched hearts to use as masks with my plate. Having the shapes punched ready on hand I started with some red paint as my initial layer. Today I am working on my 8 x 10 Inch Gelli Plate.   For my first print layer I just used Red Punched Hearts ready to use For my second print layer I added a mix of Acrylic Paints in other red tones such as Red Gold, Red Violet and Magenta with a touch of white to the plate and roughly brayered these across the plate trying not to blend them totally together. Before taking my original red print to pick up the second print I proceeded to add my punch...

Gelli, Steampunk, Reindeer

This month at Altered Pages we are teaming up with  Smeared Ink and featuring some of their wonderful Steampunk inspired Digital Images.  I just couldn't resist choosing their very cute Brass Steampunk Reindeer and teaming it up with a Gelli Plate Background. Today I reached for my 5 x 7" Gelli Plate which is just perfect for creating backgrounds for cards and tags.  I wanted to create a Steampunk inspired background to go with the Reindeer Image.  So I grabbed out some chipboard gears and cogs I had on hand and after adding a coat of paint (a mix of Green and Red Fluid/Flow Acrylic) to the Gelli Plate, pressed these in like stamps to imprint the design, when you remove them the paint comes with it. I chose to work with papers for my card today from the Glitz  Joyeux Noel Papers  and used one of these to pick up my print.  The tiny polka dot design of the paper combined with the print taken from my Gelli Plate adds wonderful interest. ...

Unruly Goodie Bags

Hi Everyone it's Danie here!  As you read this post I will be in a beautiful part of the world hosting the Unruly PaperArts Retreat so thought I would share the way I artfully decorated and created the Goodies Bags that each attendee will be receiving which used an assortment of wonderful supplies you can find here at Altered Pages. I thought this perfectly meets our It's a Wrap theme here on the blog this month. I started with a Kraft Paper Shopping Bag and decided I was going to use my Gelli Plate some pizzazz, our theme for the retreat is Step Into Spring. My Gelli Printed Image would be in the centre so I decided to use a stencil first to add further detail and frame my print.  I used the TCW 12 x 12 Honeycomb Stencil and sponged on a mix of Green Acrylic Paints. Using some other assorted Greens I then applied a layer of paint to the Gelli Plate and took a print.  I did a mix of starting with a dark layer and then a light layer and vice versa.  For...

spritzy atc backgrounds with Stencil 1

Do your backgrounds ever need a little extra something?  I had some Gelli Plate monoprints that wanted a boost, and this eight pack (in my mind I call it an eight pack) of atc sized stencils from Stencil 1 was just the thing. The stencils separate, but I left the sheet whole, clipped it to the print, and gave it a spritzing with some Dylusions spray inks .  The paper on the left, below, is another print I used to pull the ink off the top of the stencil, kind of like a print, and basically the stencil in reverse: The result? A variety of backgrounds perfect for atcs,, ready to be cut to size and put to use: Altered Pages and Stencil 1 Update--here are two of the four atcs I've finished so far.  Same image, but I thought it would be fun to see the different effect of the backgrounds: Each of the atcs, plus some fun little extras, are up for the giving away of at THIS BLOG POST . Thank you for stopping by today, and happy creating to you! :)tris...
