Mechanical Heart

an awesome mechanical heart card.

This is the first time I have ever used a digital stamp. I don't know how I went this long. I loved being able to play with the size. This is the Sewn Heart from Smeared Ink. I printed my image on card stock and fussy cut the image. I actually printed the image twice so I could use bits and pieces to layer. I cut a large portion out to make a window.

I added some mesh behind the heart and used double stick tape to hold it in place.

Using my second image I covered the thin edge with washi tape and then cut it out to place on top of my full piece. You can't really tell, but there is some Clearly for Art plastic on top of the mesh so it looks like the bolts are holding this piece in place. The bolts are some funky brads.

Here you can see I was playing around with how I wanted to color my image. I decided to keep it all in shades of blue.

For my card base I used white card stock and inked the edges with a dark gray ink.

Various papers were ripped, inked, and layered. I also added my sentiment.

I colored my image using my waterbrush and inks. The bottom of the heart is wired shut. I also stitched the top portion. I did both of these intentionally sloppy. I wanted it to look like it was being worked on. The heart was added to the card using dimensional tape.

I added gears, some are actual watch gears.

Crackle texture paste hearts run down the side. Again these are intentionally imperfect.

The card is complete! I love the imperfect beauty of the piece.

Handy Tip for Artists, Recyclers and Neat Freaks! I have a follow-up to the Citra-Sol method for creating fabulous background pages and collages. I bought a big bag of navel oranges and realized I had the ingredients to make my own solvent! Simply take a clean glass jar, peel the rind from the oranges and place all the rind/peels, without the pulp (tangerines, oranges, navels) into the jar. Pour enough vinegar over the peels to cover them. Allow the jar to sit for a week or two and VOILA! You have made your own solvent for literally pennies. You will notice the liquid getting a bit thicker than the plain vinegar and it does not smell bad!!! I now have a HUGE jar on the window sill! Be careful and only use this after testing on a safe spot.
