Altered Art is for Misfits

"They never let poor Rudolph join in any reindeer games."

Like many altered art crafters, I have a fondness for Steampunk. Yet, it is such an odd genre--it combines Victorian fashion and 19th century steam-powered industrial machinery with technology, sci-fi and fantasy. Let's face it. Steampunk is a misfit.

So it is fitting that I paid homage to the epitome of misfits, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, by creating Steampunk Rudolph. I'm Betsy Skagen of Paper Calliope, and you can see just how much of a misfit Steampunk Rudolph is from the background of games that he is not allowed to join.

I began this project by gathering some of the game ephemera that I wanted to use for my project, then tearing, cutting and inking Christmas papers for my background. While the game pieces came from my personal collection, it just so happens that Altered Pages sells  packets of vintage games pieces.

Next I printed two copies of the Steampunk Reindeer from Smeared Ink. After fussy cutting out one of the reindeer, I painted him, added a red glitter glue nose and gold micro-bead antlers. Then I cut out a silhouette from black cardstock that was slightly larger than the original reindeer.

I created a Steampunk heart by coiling different colors of wire, pressing them flat and adhering them to the back of the reindeer I had painted. I glued the reindeer onto the black cardstock silhouette.

On the second reindeer that I earlier printed, I painted the collar and glued on three miniature jingle bells. I fussy-cut out the collar and adhered it to the first reindeer with three-dimensional adhesive foam. Then, I glued some small gears on top of the reindeer.

Next I punched snowflakes from tin sheeting and from black cardstock and attached the tin snowflakes to the black snowflakes with three-dimensional adhesive dots

I brought all the elements together to complete my project. Rudolph and I thank you for stopping by! May all the misfits out there keep shining on! -Betsy

Handy Tip for Artists, Recyclers and Neat Freaks! I have a follow-up to the Citra-Sol method for creating fabulous background pages and collages.   I bought a big bag of navel oranges and realized I had the ingredients to make my own solvent!   Simply take a clean glass jar, peel the rind from the oranges and place all the rind/peels, without the pulp (tangerines, oranges, navels) into the jar.   Pour enough vinegar over the peels to cover them.    Allow the jar to sit for a week or two and VOILA!     You have made your own solvent for literally pennies.    You will notice the liquid getting a bit thicker than the plain vinegar and it does not smell bad!!! I now have a  HUGE jar on the window sill!       Be careful and only use this after testing on a safe spot.
