Feature Artist Dani May

Today we are honored to reintroduce you to
DANIE MAY
from Australia

Many of you may recognize Danie as she was a member of the Altered Pages Design Team for several years.  She currently is the owner editor of Unruly PaperArts which is a collaborative blog on all things papercraft and mixed media.  Danie is an amazing mixed media artist and has mastered the Gelli Plate

When did you realize you might have a real desire or talent for creating Art?
I have always been creative and had a love of art, I think it came from my father’s side of the family as he and most of his siblings were/are creative in one form or another. I did art as a subject at high school and initially enrolled at Uni to do a Bachelor of Arts, with Art History etc as some of my subjects however it wasn’t to be at the time and for a while art was not a part of my life at all. Over the years I have tried my hand at a variety of creative endeavors including woodturning and dried flower arranging but it was paper crafting that totally won my heart around 2000 after attending a Creative Memories Party. I began my papercraft journey as a rubber stamper and card maker, later branching into other areas. For a number of years now I have been participating in regular ATC Swaps and collecting them from artists around the world. I have a number of collections on the go, and more recently I have found a love of photography, and creating digital art where I use some of my my mixed media art with digital elements and my own photos.

What is your favorite medium for creating?
I love mixing it up but paint is definitely a favorite at this moment. I am currently doing the Bloom True E Course with Flora Bowley and when I go on holidays etc I simply love to draw what I see and use my watercolor pencils and paints to capture the landscapes etc.

If you could use only one color in your art what would that color be?
That’s a hard one for me as I love most colors so I would probably break that rule straight from the gecko. Lately however I have had a love for Turquoise/Aqua/Teal Tones so let’s go with that.

SIGNIFICANT People  or Pets in your life: My husband is the most significant person in my life and I can honestly talk to him about anything and everything and he is supportive of everything I do particularly of my art. My parents and my husband’s mother are also significant to us both and they are all supportive of everything we do. As for Pets we presently have two cats, pure bred British Shorthairs. Since I was twelve years of age I have always had grey cats in my life. Felix our male cat often keeps me company when I am creating, his sister BB (short for Clarabell which means bright and beautiful) however is banned from my studio as all she wants to do when in there is chew on all the ribbons and steal my washi tape lol.

  2. Such delightful work - I am especially enamored of the faery ATC, the Asian card, and the Gelli Plate pieces - but they're all delightful. It's nice to see her work at Altered Pages again, even though I like Unruly Paperarts, as well!

Handy Tip for Artists, Recyclers and Neat Freaks! I have a follow-up to the Citra-Sol method for creating fabulous background pages and collages.   I bought a big bag of navel oranges and realized I had the ingredients to make my own solvent!   Simply take a clean glass jar, peel the rind from the oranges and place all the rind/peels, without the pulp (tangerines, oranges, navels) into the jar.   Pour enough vinegar over the peels to cover them.    Allow the jar to sit for a week or two and VOILA!     You have made your own solvent for literally pennies.    You will notice the liquid getting a bit thicker than the plain vinegar and it does not smell bad!!! I now have a  HUGE jar on the window sill!       Be careful and only use this after testing on a safe spot.
