Meet the Altered Pages Designers: Barbara Rankin!

At Altered Pages we have a very talented Design Team!

Today we are honored to introduce you to
BARBARA RANKIN!

Hi everyone.  Barbara here with my Altered Pages Design Team Moment. Each month, one of our design team members will share some bits of information about themselves, and any fun facts and accomplishments we think you might find interesting.

First of all, I am so thrilled to be continuing my adventure with the AP Design Team.  I have been a crafter since early childhood.  I have always loved making things, from those crazy, loopy potholders for every family member, to visiting the creek in my local woods for marine clay to make ashtrays or bowls for everyone.  Next came sewing my own clothes.  I actually became quite the seamstress, if I do say so myself.  A natural progression to needlework, i.e., cross-stitch and needlepoint, came next.  I won several blue ribbons at various needlework exhibitions, to include winning three ribbons (First Place, President’s Choice, and People’s Choice) for my reproduction of a cross-stitch sampler made in 1769 on 50 count linen with silk thread, at the Oatlands Plantation Needlework Exhibition in Leesburg, Virginia.  It was the hit of the show and I am very happy that my beloved mother lived long enough to see this accomplishment.

Pergamano, the ancient art of embossing on vellum, was next.  I entered and won an international contest, judged by Janet Wilson, renowned Pergamano artist and author.  This was such an honor for me.   This next led me to find my way to rubber stamping and graduating into a self-taught, mixed media artist.

I have taught classes at my local scrapbook store, as well as to the members of my local stamp club.  I have also been a guest instructor at another out-of-state stamp club on several occasions.  I am on several design teams, and have been published in Altered Arts Magazine and Just Steampunk, Volumes 2, 4, and 6, as well as a  book entitled “Make it in Minutes: Mini Books”.  My style has changed dramatically over the years.  Now, I prefer vintage or shabby chic, with a sprinkling of steampunk whenever possible. I have a wonderful, supportive husband of thirty-three years, and we share our home with our two cute little Yorkie fur babies, Chloe and Zoe.

Here are a few of my favorite projects:

Handy Tip for Artists, Recyclers and Neat Freaks! I have a follow-up to the Citra-Sol method for creating fabulous background pages and collages.   I bought a big bag of navel oranges and realized I had the ingredients to make my own solvent!   Simply take a clean glass jar, peel the rind from the oranges and place all the rind/peels, without the pulp (tangerines, oranges, navels) into the jar.   Pour enough vinegar over the peels to cover them.    Allow the jar to sit for a week or two and VOILA!     You have made your own solvent for literally pennies.    You will notice the liquid getting a bit thicker than the plain vinegar and it does not smell bad!!! I now have a  HUGE jar on the window sill!       Be careful and only use this after testing on a safe spot.
