Having Fun Experimenting!

Continuing on with our month long partnership with DecoArt, Stephanie here.

My post today is about having fun experimenting. To be honest I really wanted to have time to just play with as many of the DecoArt products as possible...and boy did I.  I actually got so caught up in just using the product that I am still not sure what life this project is going to have.  I know there will be some collage incorporated, but I am just going to let that
come to me when it feels like it.
For now, I am just enjoying the layers of fun I already have.

I started with this metal tin wall plaque...cute on its own, but it needed new life.  It measures approximately 9 x 11 inches.  (sorry it is a bit blurry) It actually can be used as a message board as it came with a pretty rusty metal magnet.  You will see that in a bit.
Some Gesso to start fresh.
Then, some texture with my DecoArt Matte Medium and my KaiserCraft 12 x 12 Qaurters stencil.

This was just adding some texture, not with my palette knife, but a wooden Silly Stick.  I love using this tool.
Next, I added some brilliant color with my DecoArt Media Shimmer Mist in Turquoise.  I had fun testing this out in this next pic.  I love the drippies!
This was done on an old text page.  It is so going into a future project...maybe even this one.
Next, I came in with a thin layer of the DecoArt Crackle Paste.  I used a thin layer as I was not sure of the drying time.  The thicker the layer the bigger the cracks you should have when dry.
While waiting for the crackler paste to dry I added some detail around the edges on the frame.  For this I just made dots in Cerulean Blue (fluid acrylic) and Gold Interferece.  This creates a look that actually changes color to some degree when looking at the project from different angles, very cool.  Then, after the crackle was completely dry I added some more turquoise, actually this is the Cobalt Teal Hue in the fluid acrylic line.  One of my FAVORITE colors.
I then added Liquid Glass over top of the blue dots.  The pic above is after they are dry and the pic below is while wet.  It literally dries like glass.  This will have many uses for sure!

These next two show the awesome texture and deep color.  This was done with just one color of paint and one color of shimmer mist.  Nice, deep color saturation in some areas and lighter in others, just with the amount of paint used.  I did not water anything down or add white to anything.  You can see those great little crackles.

Here is the magnet I mentioned.  I painted the top half so you can see the original finish.  I painted the entire metal piece with Cobalt Teal Hue, almost as a wash, and just kept layering until I got the amount of color I wanted.  Being a fluid acrylic I really had a good deal of play in the drying time so I was able to work the paint in all the cracks and crevasses.
It appears to have years and years of patina.
And, here you see how it stands now.  I have a few collage images in mind and a bit more manipulation to that background.  I love how these paints, mediums, pastes and shimmer mists worked on metal.  Just goes to show you don't have to paint on canvas or wood only.  Just experiment, have fun and be open to the process.

I will post the final of this WIP at some point in the near future.

Thank you for stopping by.

Handy Tip for Artists, Recyclers and Neat Freaks! I have a follow-up to the Citra-Sol method for creating fabulous background pages and collages.   I bought a big bag of navel oranges and realized I had the ingredients to make my own solvent!   Simply take a clean glass jar, peel the rind from the oranges and place all the rind/peels, without the pulp (tangerines, oranges, navels) into the jar.   Pour enough vinegar over the peels to cover them.    Allow the jar to sit for a week or two and VOILA!     You have made your own solvent for literally pennies.    You will notice the liquid getting a bit thicker than the plain vinegar and it does not smell bad!!! I now have a  HUGE jar on the window sill!       Be careful and only use this after testing on a safe spot.
