Give me color!

Hi everyone. Happy New Year!
Welcome to what is sure to be a great month of art!
Altered Pages  is proud to be partnering with DecoArt
for the entire month of January.

For today's post I have created a painted canvas.
This post is titled "Give Me Color"
for a really great reason...I decided I needed more colorful art on my walls.
Now, this started out in my mind completely different than
how the finished product looks.  Happens to me all the time!!!  That is what I love about art.
It can take on a life all its own and becomes what it wants sometimes.

I started with a canvas that you will see started out long ago as a Halloween decoration that never came to be.
A little coat of gesso and it was all new and ready to go.

Before the coat of gesso I added some round adhesive stickers for a little dimension.
Then, gessoed the entire canvas.

I then started the background using the DecoArt Cobalt Teal Hue and Ultramarine Blue fluid acrylic.
Next, I wanted big black drippy circles.  You can see here that the design is facing a different direction than the one at the top of the post....I changed my mind.  It just looked like upside down was actually right side up to me as it took shape.

I then added color and shading to the drippy circles with the Hansa Yellow Light Fluid Acrylic and the Imperial Purple Art Anthology Dimensional Acrylic.  I truly loved working with these paints.  They were this lovely mix of fluid and transparent.
It is hard to put into words exactly the effect of these very cool acrylics.
I hope you can get even a glimpse of the semi-opaque quality in the close ups here.

And, finished!

Hope you enjoyed!
Pleas remember to check out the links below for the supplies I used to create this canvas.
I know I will be going to these fluid acrylics from DecoArt as my "go to" paints!  They were a lot of fun to work with.

Thanks for stopping by.

  7. This is very cool Steph! I have yet to play with the DecoArt fluids - only use Goldens for now. Do you paint with any other brands of fluids & if so, how do you think they compare?

    1. Thanks Becky! I will be honest...I have used Golden, but not their fluid acrylics. These are my first. I really do love them. They go one so creamy, but with a light and airiness feel too, if that even makes sense...probably not. They were lots of fun to play with. I am looking forward to my next post using them.

  9. This is sooooo coooool, Steph. I see something different each time I look at it. I can understand how you had to make a choice as to which way is up. It looks good either way.

Handy Tip for Artists, Recyclers and Neat Freaks! I have a follow-up to the Citra-Sol method for creating fabulous background pages and collages.   I bought a big bag of navel oranges and realized I had the ingredients to make my own solvent!   Simply take a clean glass jar, peel the rind from the oranges and place all the rind/peels, without the pulp (tangerines, oranges, navels) into the jar.   Pour enough vinegar over the peels to cover them.    Allow the jar to sit for a week or two and VOILA!     You have made your own solvent for literally pennies.    You will notice the liquid getting a bit thicker than the plain vinegar and it does not smell bad!!! I now have a  HUGE jar on the window sill!       Be careful and only use this after testing on a safe spot.
