Altered Vase/Candle Holder

Hi everyone!  Can you believe that we are already halfway through November?  I'm not sure where the time goes.  You probably already know that the Design Team here at Altered Pages Artsociates is working with a wonderful product called Craft Attitude.  So let's jump in!

My project this week begins with a clear square glass candle holder found at a household goods store.  It's a great size and can be used to hold either candles or as a vase for flowers.  I wanted to use images that would show off the square shape, so I chose a collage sheet from Altered Pages called Beautiful Ladies.  Each of these images is printed on a tall thin strip, so working in pieces with Craft Attitude to cover the glass was very easy.

I staggered the height of each image on purpose.  I didn't want a straight line of faces across the top.  I had to print the collage twice to have enough of these lovelies to go all around the surface.  I made sure no two connecting sides had the same woman so that if you looked at it from an angle you would still see all different images.

The Craft Attitude film has a matte finish and I wanted these to blend into the glass so once all of the images were in place I sealed them in place with a glossy coating.  I used two layers for a smoother finish.

I considered many different types of embellishments from beads to charms to silk flowers but many of them covered up too much of the images and when the candle was added all I noticed was the dark shadow where the candle couldn't shine through.  So in the end, I chose a lovely ribbon for the bottom of the holder and Dew Drops for the top of each image.  The decision about where to place the drops took a long time.  I didn't like them completely filling in the blank glass at the top because they detracted from the ladies but I didn't want the straight line of each image showing.  I like the staggered look and I love how they glow when the candle is on!

Below is a more detailed look at this project.

Handy Tip for Artists, Recyclers and Neat Freaks! I have a follow-up to the Citra-Sol method for creating fabulous background pages and collages.   I bought a big bag of navel oranges and realized I had the ingredients to make my own solvent!   Simply take a clean glass jar, peel the rind from the oranges and place all the rind/peels, without the pulp (tangerines, oranges, navels) into the jar.   Pour enough vinegar over the peels to cover them.    Allow the jar to sit for a week or two and VOILA!     You have made your own solvent for literally pennies.    You will notice the liquid getting a bit thicker than the plain vinegar and it does not smell bad!!! I now have a  HUGE jar on the window sill!       Be careful and only use this after testing on a safe spot.
