The Sea is Calling Mixed Media Artwork

Hi Everyone it's Danie back again with my second project for October using products from Art Anthology.  I was sent a beautiful bird stencil and some of their Embedibles.

I initially started out creating this idea on a large canvas which I was happy with but I decided it would look better done on watercolor paper with allowance of some white space around the edges.  This is a look at the process and my trial run.  I will then be recreating it once more on my better quality watercolor paper in the hope of framing it.

Here's how it came together.

I started by masking off the edges of my A3 piece of Watercolor to frame my painting.

I then took my pointy circles stencil from the Crafter Workshop and using gesso created some texture to the bottom of my project which would become the water/sea.  I also smeared some gesso around the top of my project just to add some interest with a plastic knife.  Some blue came off the stencil given I hadn't cleaned it from when I used it on my canvas.

Next I layered a coat of gel medium across the top section, to adhere some of the Art Anthology Embedibles.  These are a light chipboard shape (hexagon's in this case) so I sprinkled them on a bit like confetti.  I then took some punchinella and Gesso and smeared it over the areas with the confetti to add further interest and texture.

Then using some blue toned Gelatos (light for the sky and dark for the water) I made a color wash and brushed over the entire background.  I dried very roughly with a heat gun.

Next I used some Spray Inks and sprayed a blue over my sky and a turquoise over the water.

After dabbing it dry with a paper towel I took my Art Anthology Bird Stencil and some black ink to add some birds to the sky.

I added a lighthouse (I used a stamp but Altered Pages has a Collage Sheet with a variety of lighthouses you could also use) to one side of my project.  Using a brown Gelato I colored in and expanded on the rock formation.  I then took some Fairy (Green) Dimensional Crystal Paint from Art Anthology and blended across where the water and sky meet.

To finish I took some punchinella and added some white to the water, making it look like the water was a bit rough and crashing over the rocks.  I also added a touch of the punchinella design in black ink around the edges for a bit of interest.

Remember I said this was a trial run, you may have noticed where the masking tape took some of the cheaper watercolor paper with it.  Having tested the process and being happy with how this has turned out I am going to do a couple of different seaside inspired prints using this stencil and play some more.  This one will probably end up in one of my journals.

Handy Tip for Artists, Recyclers and Neat Freaks! I have a follow-up to the Citra-Sol method for creating fabulous background pages and collages.   I bought a big bag of navel oranges and realized I had the ingredients to make my own solvent!   Simply take a clean glass jar, peel the rind from the oranges and place all the rind/peels, without the pulp (tangerines, oranges, navels) into the jar.   Pour enough vinegar over the peels to cover them.    Allow the jar to sit for a week or two and VOILA!     You have made your own solvent for literally pennies.    You will notice the liquid getting a bit thicker than the plain vinegar and it does not smell bad!!! I now have a  HUGE jar on the window sill!       Be careful and only use this after testing on a safe spot.
