Danse Macabre with Andy Skinner

Stencils are one of my favorite tools and I am addicted to using them in just about everything lately. My collection has been growing in leaps and bounds this year thanks to Altered Pages and the amazing selection of stencils cherry picked by Jean Moore to delight us all! One of the many artists designing stencils is Andy Skinner of the U.K. and I was so excited to get my hands on this one.

VOODOO by Andy Skinner

Art Macabre may not be everyone's cup of tea but in many cultures including Europe since Medieval times death imagery is actually a reminder to celebrate your life and enjoy each moment, as we never know when the Grim Reaper is coming. In other words, using the gruesome, ghastly, and horrifying in your art is just another way of saying YOLO ("You only Live Once")

This is a sneak peek at a kit that I designed for Altered Pages that will be available soon!

To make this voodoo doll I simply used the stencil as a template to cut out some air dry paper clay. I chose it because it is lightweight and easy to shape but Fimo clay or Extra heavy modeling paste would also work if you have any of those lying around your studio! I very sloppily smothered him in walnut ink and attached more embellishment while the clay was still wet. You guessed it- those skeletons are from an Altered Pages collage. I will be sharing more about my kit as soon as it posts to the website and I have heard it from a little bird that it could be very soon!

Silly girl, it's your birthday today, not Halloween!

Handy Tip for Artists, Recyclers and Neat Freaks! I have a follow-up to the Citra-Sol method for creating fabulous background pages and collages.   I bought a big bag of navel oranges and realized I had the ingredients to make my own solvent!   Simply take a clean glass jar, peel the rind from the oranges and place all the rind/peels, without the pulp (tangerines, oranges, navels) into the jar.   Pour enough vinegar over the peels to cover them.    Allow the jar to sit for a week or two and VOILA!     You have made your own solvent for literally pennies.    You will notice the liquid getting a bit thicker than the plain vinegar and it does not smell bad!!! I now have a  HUGE jar on the window sill!       Be careful and only use this after testing on a safe spot.
