Spring Equinox

Rebirth, Renewal and Refresh The  vernal equinox , also called the  Spring Equinox , marking the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, occurs on Tuesday, March 20 at 12:15  P.M. EDT.  On this day, the Sun rises due east and sets due west. In the Southern Hemisphere, this date marks the  autumnal equinox . Spring is associated with rebirth and renewal, therefore Easter is such an iconic Holiday.  The Easter date travels as it is based on the approximate time of the   Jewish Passover,  which was celebrated on the first   full moon   following the vernal equinox. This soon led to Christians celebrating Easter on different dates. At the end of the 2nd century, some churches celebrated Easter on the day of the Passover, while others celebrated it on the following  Sunday . Flowers play such an important role for Spring and Easter, that is why I chose to create a floral stenciled project this week.  ...

Feathers...

Today I have for you a mixed media piece  featuring a  feather stencil. This project started with a substrate of cardboard.  (actually it is about a 9x10 inch piece of ceral box)  With matte medium, I adhered scraps of patterned paper, vintage music sheet  and inked up vintage text pages to the cardboard.  Then, I gave the whole piece a thin coat of  gesso. Next, I used a flower stencil and added a bit of texture with white acrylic paint.  Then came time to  ink it up. This piece basically used all the same steps.   This was a smaller piece of cardboard, gesso, a feather stencil with  modeling paste and inks.  I felt it needed a bit more dimension so I added a vintage text page flower that I made previously.  The colors were spot on and I had the perfect  feather giant gem  for the center of my flower.    I just happened to have a few chip board peacock fea...

Playing with Paint and Stencils

One of my favorite sayings when I am creating is 'Don't stress embrace the mess' and apart from glitter I don't think there is too many other things that could beat paint as something that can get really messy for you whilst creating.  Playing with paint and stencils is fun and a great way to create layers and interest particularly for journal page backgrounds. I actually started by using my Gel Press Plate (12 x 14) to get some base color quickly onto my page.  Adding paint to the plate, spreading it across the plate and then pressing my journal pages directly to the plate.  This is the part where you embrace the mess as you won't always get perfect coverage etc. Next I brayered black paint onto the Plate and used a large 12 x 12 Stencil while the stencil was still on the plate I pressed one page of my journal into the plate picking up the positive print space, then removing the stencil I picked up the remaining design on the other page. ...
