Tag--I'm it!

At the beginning of this year I had the reasonable--and not a bit lofty--intention of participating in Mr. Holtz's 12 Tags of 2015.

That lasted exactly one month. Hey, what can I say? I'm a busy gal!!!!

So now it's October and I am finally getting back to the 2015 tags. I'm Betsy Skagen of Paper Calliope and while playing a little catch-up, I decided to make the August tag with a--gasp--October theme. You better alert Homeland Security since I'm such a rebel.

One nice thing about being a non-conformist is that I don't feel I have to adhere to a certain product list. As a result, I decided that Altered Pages eye-catching images would be downright boo-ti-ful for a Halloween tag. Below is how I made my tag, but it is only right to acknowledge that I loosely based my tag of the Tim Holtz August 2015 Tag

Halloween tag tutorial

Step 1 Use a die cut machine to repeatedly cut small leaves from a manilla tag. Save the leaves that you cut out.

Step 2 Print several of the colorful leaf images from the Fall Splendor Collage Sheet and adhere them to a second manilla tag with matte multi-medium, aligning the placement with the die cuts on the first tag.

Step 3 Adhere the cut tag to a second background tag using multi-medium.

Step 4 Apply a layer of multi-medium over the entire tag. Let dry.

Step 5  Paint white gesso over the entire tag. Dab and wipe away some of the gesso with a dry paper towel to reveal the leaves through the die cut leaves.

Step 6 Swipe blue, green and red ink pads directly over the dry gessoed background.

Step 7 Apply a thin layer of multi-medium over inks.Use a paper towel to dab away excess ink.

Step 8  Use a blending tool to blend orange ink onto the die cut leaves.

Step 9  Use a blending tool to blend green ink onto the die cut leaves.

Step 10  Repeat the process by using a blending tool to blend brick red and brown inks onto the die cut leaves.

Step 11 Apply multi medium over the leaves and sprinkle red and gold microbeads onto the leaves. Let dry.

Step 12 Fussy cut pumpkin and children image, Halloween greetings text and and goblin text from the Vintage Halloween Collage Sheet. Ink edges of Halloween greetings and goblin text with brown ink and adhere to tag with multi medium. Apply multi medium over the top of all images on the card.

Step 13  Adhere leaves, and ephemera to tag with multi-medium applying it to the back and front. Let dry.

Step 14  Glue stars and copper flowers to tag. Adhere colorful Dew Drops to copper flowers.

Step 15  Let entire tag dry.

Step 14  Use a black marker to define edges of leaves. Smudge with your finger.

Step 15 Ink edges of tag with brown ink.

Step 16 Attach orange zig zag ribbon to teal velvet ribbon. Thread through top of tag.

Thanks for stopping by. Have a spook-tacular Halloween!

-Betsy

  1. I love this tag - not only is it well composed, but I really like that, other than the orange, all the colors are really summer colors, and yet the overall effect is very autumn-y. Nice eye for color, there! It's quite effective.

    Maybe I'll ... no, I won't ... I have a 'to do' list a mile long. For NEXT year.

  2. Very fall like tag Betsy! Yeah I have "looked" at Tim's tag challenge but that is as far as I have got with it. Maybe one day when I don't have a to do list a mile long I will do it. Awesome job!

Handy Tip for Artists, Recyclers and Neat Freaks! I have a follow-up to the Citra-Sol method for creating fabulous background pages and collages.   I bought a big bag of navel oranges and realized I had the ingredients to make my own solvent!   Simply take a clean glass jar, peel the rind from the oranges and place all the rind/peels, without the pulp (tangerines, oranges, navels) into the jar.   Pour enough vinegar over the peels to cover them.    Allow the jar to sit for a week or two and VOILA!     You have made your own solvent for literally pennies.    You will notice the liquid getting a bit thicker than the plain vinegar and it does not smell bad!!! I now have a  HUGE jar on the window sill!       Be careful and only use this after testing on a safe spot.
