Artistic Sundays

Yesterday was an open house at Shemer Art Center.   We got to see many artists demoing their Art techniques and creations.   It was very diverse, from jewelry created from raw metals, oil painting, pencil drawing, life portraits and more.

I have a new Art Hero, his name is John Erwin and he coincidentally is the Shemer Artist of the Year (understandably so!!)  The pieces you see here are all from his mind, no images or still life or landscapes in front of him.    He was amazing to watch.   He works in other mediums but watercolor is his forte.   John is a second grade teacher and art is his passion and 'hobby'.   You can see how his students must love him and INSPIRE HIM, he is totally free in his art!

John showed us how he uses India Ink (yep the good old black stuff) and a razor to sketch out a base for a watercolor piece.   He sometimes does this and other times not.   He did a very loose floral for us too and he did it with total abandon!

John let us all with a great tip.  Always make your art 'smile'.   He makes sure his color starts off one side and dips in the center and lifts off the other side of the paper upwards.    It was totally subliminal but yes, when he said it we saw it!

ENJOY YOUR SUNDAY wherever you are.

  2. I just love that bottom painting - it looks like many of the hills of homes we saw while in Greece.

    Sounds like a nice day!

(By the way, enjoyed seeing you on the tutorial spot for the Mailbox Muse yesterday!)

  3. Thanks Tristan, John was so very inspiring. He does go to Italy often and it shows in his Mediterranean influence (Greece). He did another piece with just brush and watercolor, to see him create windows, doors, bushes, etc with one brush stroke was amazing. He dips his fingers in paint water to splash onto the paper. Inspiring! I was enamored with his total freedom.

Handy Tip for Artists, Recyclers and Neat Freaks! I have a follow-up to the Citra-Sol method for creating fabulous background pages and collages.   I bought a big bag of navel oranges and realized I had the ingredients to make my own solvent!   Simply take a clean glass jar, peel the rind from the oranges and place all the rind/peels, without the pulp (tangerines, oranges, navels) into the jar.   Pour enough vinegar over the peels to cover them.    Allow the jar to sit for a week or two and VOILA!     You have made your own solvent for literally pennies.    You will notice the liquid getting a bit thicker than the plain vinegar and it does not smell bad!!! I now have a  HUGE jar on the window sill!       Be careful and only use this after testing on a safe spot.
