Altered Memories

Growing up my mom had this beautiful old hand held mirror that I loved to use while playing dress up. It had a gold frame and handle and had butterflies handstitched onto a piece of material that was attached on the back of the mirror. Recently my son was cleaning out a drawer and found this little mirror that he never uses so he asked me if I would like to have it. I laid it aside thinking that it would make a great project, but I wasn't sure what to do with it. One day, while looking at it I remembered that mirror my mom had and thought that one of the Altered Pages collage sheets would be perfect to use to give this mirror a make over. I chose the Victorian Butterfly Collage Sheet (AP-1066) after painting it. I adhered them using some Crystal Lacquer. Then, I decided it needed more so I mixed some of the Terri Sproul Mica Powder Gold Dust into some of the laquer and handed painted a gold frame around the glass mirror and added some hand painted flourishes. Once it was all dry, I used the Crystal Lacquer to complete seal the entire wood frame.  This mirror is one of my favorite altered pieces that I have done and even though the mirror my mom had is long gone; I will always know that her mirror was the inspiration for the one that I did.

Handy Tip for Artists, Recyclers and Neat Freaks! I have a follow-up to the Citra-Sol method for creating fabulous background pages and collages.   I bought a big bag of navel oranges and realized I had the ingredients to make my own solvent!   Simply take a clean glass jar, peel the rind from the oranges and place all the rind/peels, without the pulp (tangerines, oranges, navels) into the jar.   Pour enough vinegar over the peels to cover them.    Allow the jar to sit for a week or two and VOILA!     You have made your own solvent for literally pennies.    You will notice the liquid getting a bit thicker than the plain vinegar and it does not smell bad!!! I now have a  HUGE jar on the window sill!       Be careful and only use this after testing on a safe spot.
