I am Jean and I own Alteredpages.com. (sounds like I'm at a self help group!) Owning a small business probably should have a self help group! As an owner I get to buy, sell, stock, test, talk, write, blog, and be the janitor! Often I do not take time to do what I love best and that is create! I have so many ideas flying around in my brain and so many things I want to learn more about.

Since one of my true loves is working in clay (the mud kind) I was thinking about getting PaperClay to test and see how it goes. Do you use paperclay and if so, what do you think of it?

I got some new gold ink from Tuskineko called Delicata, it is superb & can resemble gold leaf. I was thinking about how that ink might look on paperclay flowers or people. I can envision those knickknacks from the 50's with the Marie Antoinette style women & men in gorgeous suits & gowns, gold rimmed and trimmed. Did your Mom or Auntie have some of these? My Mom had lamps with the statues, small beside table lamps & large living room lamps. There were some statues on the ever present wall shelves too. What happened to all those wall shelves?

Some were greatly colored and detailed, they were magical for me as a child.

Did you have favorite pieces in your family homes? My aunt and uncle had "Maggie and Jigs" which were chalk figures hanging on the wall, Jigs at the bottom of the stairs, holding his shoes and Maggie at the top holding her rolling pin, just waiting for him to arrive home from a night with the boys. I am so happy to say that I now have Maggie and Jigs! Such pleasant memories!

I also have the original set of Kewpie Dolls, boy and girl, that were given as my baby shower gift to my Mom. They wear hand knit clothes in pink and blue, so darling!

Inaugural Altered Box Swap

Hi, I’m Marilyn, and I’ll be your hostess for the Inaugural AlteredPages-Artsociates Altered Box Swap.

Okay, first, the particulars. The theme is Housewives and you will need a box (Altered Pages does carry some HERE) to create your project (you can use a small empty cereal, jewelry box, or other box). Please keep the box to no larger than 5 x 7 x 1.5 inches which will enable us to send using Priority Mail Flat Rate.

Below is the 3-1/8” square box that will be included in a package you can purchase (see below).

We do ask that since this swap is being hosted by Altered Pages, that you use some of their products (they have some great Digital Collages that fit the Housewives theme) in the creation of your box. Jean from Altered Pages has put together a Special Package for this swap, but it is not required that you purchase it. You can see it HERE. The package includes one 3-1/8” square box, a collage, Graphic 45 Domestic Goddess Tags, UHU glue, & miscellaneous ephemera.

Now, will your Altered Box be styled in the 20’s, 30’s, or today? Will it be Victorian? Will it be based on the TV show Housewives of New York City or Orange County, or will it be something totally unique. Maybe Housewives of the future? Anything to do with Housewives is a go!

Lace, buttons, ribbons, paper, collage sheets (Altered Pages), German scrap, paint, brads, knobs, metal findings, charms, etc., the list goes on and on as to the materials that can be used. Did you know Altered Pages carries a neat Housewife stamp!?!

Have fun! Stretch your imagination - think “outside the box” LOL.

Altered Box...Bloom

Hi everyone ! Eunice here , just wanted to share a little project I completed using the little Shadow Box from Altered Pages ! I enjoy creating little "scenes" & these little boxes are perfect for that ! I covered the inside & outside of the box using Glitz paper ( adorable line ) !

Has that worn vintage look ! I had three little wood spools that needed a home , so I created ever so tiny flowers from sheet music paper and used vintage buttons for the centers , all on a wire and glued into the spool , there you go ...instant garden ! Made a little banner out of paper and stamped the word "BLOOM" on it and of course glittered the edges for some sparkle !

I added some vintage buttons and seam binding to the front

On the side of the box I used some tape to add some interest ! There you go , a quick little project to create ! I hope you will enjoy working with these little boxes as much as I do ! With Valentines Day coming you could create a sweet little gift !

Do you know what a "SILLY STICK" is?

No, it's not something you "beat yourself SILLY" with!!

It's this great, (and I mean GREAT!) little stick available at Altered Pages made just for the mixed media artist!

Hi all! Becky here today to share this great tool I used on a collage I finished this week...It worked so much better than a brayer to get my papers nice & smooth onto the "canvas"!! I loved that it squished the excess glue out the edges for easy wiping!

But apparently you can use it for all sorts of things, like spreading paint & making texture in your paint!

A very handy tool indeed!!!

Anyway...on to the collage I made with this lovely image from the "Young Lovers I" collage sheet.

"How Do I Love Thee"

I used a 12x12 panel board "canvas" to collage various papers (most from my stash, but a couple from the Glitz collections), paint, modeling paste (for texture), & ink.

Collaging is a lot of fun, but can also be a little intimidating!

I have to keep telling myself to just let go & not be so choosey about were the paper, paint & ink lands!! It's kinda free-ing!

What do you think? Is collaging easy or hard for you?

One of the great things about using this panel board instead of a deep edged canvas is that it is super steady on it's own & doesn't need a support behind it when displaying the piece on a table! Another plus was the hard surface to collage, stamp & paint on! No softness here!!

Breathing Fire into the New Year - January 23, 2012

Legend has it that in ancient times, Buddha asked all the animals to meet him on Chinese New Year. Twelve came, and Buddha named a year after each one. He announced that the people born in each animal's year would have some of that animal's personality. Those born in dragon years are innovative, brave, and passionate. Salvador Dali, John Lennon, and Mary-Louise Parker were all born in the Year of the Dragon.

Red symbolizes fire, which according to legend can drive away bad luck. For every order received until January 31, 2012, we will include a FREE RED collage, truly beautiful collages for you.

Here are some non-paper projects from Jean. Still utilizing a collage method for the chairs .....

I WAS ENAMOURED BY CHAIRS ~ I did a serious of fun recycled chairs with themes, the ones above are; "Are we there yet?" with vintage maps, postcards, bead trim, alpha collage and paints; "The Apple Blossom Princess Chair" utilizing wooden embellishments, glass knobs, hand painting, collage art & hand mixed paints; "Just because you can-can doesn't mean you should-should" - was inspired by a birthday card I received, it has dancing frogs and colorful trims of wood, plastic and paints.

The above piece was part of a study in spheres that I did in college. The removable sphere was also a noise maker. The glaze was Chun, with gold leaf applied after firing in a raku kiln. The style was handbuilding and slab work.

This piece is a raku firing, in a handbuilt coil manner. After glazing, the piece was scrubbed with a wire brush and a copper wax was used to burnish the surface. This piece won a first place award, judged by the ASU Art Dept. Chairman. I was over the moon!

Ingrid's art can be quirky, just like her personality!

And we meant that in a good way!

She easily breaks into song & dance.

She loves color & uses it with abandon.

Ingrid's work can make you feel good and add a smile to your face!

I have been a quilter for the last 18 years and a mixed media artist for the last few years. I love working with rich layered colors, textures and shapes on paper, wood, fabric and objects of all kinds. From painting with acrylics and encaustics to embroidery on felted wool, there's not much I haven't tried. I enjoy crafting, decorating and reading murder mysteries. My latest addiction has been looking at the pinboards at Pinterest. My dear software engineer husband of 31 years and I have lived in the inferno called Phoenix, AZ for the past 16 years and have a grown son at ASU studying at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism. My two cats, Ricky and Lucy keep me company while I entertain them with loose bits of ephemera that happen to fall their way. My involvement in a diverse Art Group based in PHX lead me to become acquainted with Jean Moore and learn of Alteredpages.com.

I am honored and excited to be able to participate on the design team and look forward to coming up with new ideas using Altered Pages products. Thank you!

Coffins from Girls just wanna get Spooky Gathering

These darling coffins were cut from wood with a back brace added to allow it to stand. They were painted black. The sizes ranged from approximately 5 inches tall to 12 inches tall. Then everyone was allowed to grab one or more for a project. We had papers including the Graphic 45 Halloween in Wonderland!

Some were decoupaged in total, some simply embellished.

These examples were done by Linda Anquoe of Phoenix.

Girls Just Wanna Get Spooky

One of the items made at Girls Just Wanna Get Spooky, Saturday Oct. 15, 2011

Gold Bazzill cardstock was used for the base, with a cuttlebug folder using black Bazzill cardstock creating the next layer after it had been punched by a Martha Stewart punch of dripped 'blood'! A die cut of a spider's web frame was an overlay on the cat image and a touch of orange glitter added.

The finishing touch was purple grosgrain ribbon. OHHHH so spooky.

Steampunk Stella came ready for action. She even carried a tiny derringer in her pocketbook. Stella's bowler hat was authentic and her lace wristlet was exquisite with gears, gems and more added.

Her brooch was adorned with watch parts and feathers of the most exotic style.

The Necessity shelves contained important items for any spooky gathering, jars of bats lashes,

little girls curls, lizard tongues, fallen stars, EEKs and so much more.

This little witch flew in from 700 miles away. Her broom had to be refueled along the way!

The brain specimen contained for view was from a donor named A.B. Normal, it was a delightful accent to the table of diaper doo poo with pooper scoopers, dragon poop and spider's nest cake.

All sorts of spooky females entered the Den of Iniquity!

I have been collaborating with an artist who is new to me. She came to me with some special requests and for an unknown reason, I felt I needed to take the time to accommodate her requests. Well, we have some fabulous art to share with you all. This wonderful Artist is Jeannette Bryant from Louisiana.

She has a clear image of what she wants to produce and has a sense of humor to boot!

Christmas Night

I love this image from Altered Pages. It reminds me of Christmas many years ago. I incorporated Altered Pages and Heartfelt Creations stamp. I used a spellbinders die to include a "window" onto the front of the card. I cut out the candle, embossed and placed it near the "window" I incuded some sprigs of green from Martha Stewart punch. Looks like a tree outside the window.

If you are working with glitter, how can you live without our Glitter Clean up cloth? No more glitter in the hair, on the doggie, cheeks, shoes or kids, unless you put it there! CHEAP and EFFECTIVE!CLICK here for glitter cloths

Fun techniques with glitter and tape. Our double side tape is perfect for utilizing glitter on your projects. You can use differing widths that are also perfect for attaching ribbon to paper. We have 1/8 inch, 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch widths available. click here for our adhesives and tapes

The glitter lines are created by attaching the glue tape to your decorative paper, then peel top layer of protective paper pour on glitter, burnish, brush and peel off more, add more glitter. Always burnish the glitter, pressing it into the glue tape to make sure it adheres, using a paint brush to remove excess glitter is a good idea. Always work on a surface that allows you to pour the glitter back into it's container, i.e. a piece of copier paper - fold in half and open again, allowing you to create a funnel-like pourer. Christmas Star Ornament

It's not too early to begin making Christmas ornaments to share and to keep. I love the look of handmade ornaments on a tree or as an embellishment on a special gift. This chipboard star ornament features an image from sheet #1862D - Very Vintage Santas. A watch crystal was attached over Santa's jolly face and large flake glitter surrounds the dome. Christmas ribbon was hot glued along the edges of the star and a dangling acrylic crystal adds a bit of sparkle. Yep, it's time to plan your ornaments now...Christmas will be here sooner than you think! ~Dianne

I find that yet again, I cannot make comments. I have yet to figure out the right combination of elements that do allow me to make comments. THEREFORE....

The necklace Gayle posted is gorgeous, the detail work is amazing. These stamps are small and lend themselves very well to dominoes. Gayle outdid herself again by showing her careful detailing talents.

I felt that the stamps could be great additions to ATC's as well. Nice little treats to tuck into secret places or use with our ATC Tin that comes with 20 blank cards. Our manila Tags would be a great use too.

Keep in mind the smaller stamps are only 1.00 each, sold in sets of 6 different images.

Board Book Swap

There is a fun swap in the Alteredpages Yahoo group. Our Swap Queen is Tolegranny and she is quite a force when it comes to getting us all involved and having a great time! Honestly, if I did not have her to instigate I would probably not have gotten this project done. My book is Memories of the 50's, a simple book, fun to remininsce. The prom date has a 3-D lace prom dress, as does the girdle advertisment. Foil tape and a cuttlebug was fun to incorporate. I used the accordion book which is available in our papers and books section on the website. My Mom's 50's kitchen counter had a similar pattern as the background on the Sputnik pages. I got a treat today, these 6 pumpkins arrived from

Oldgoatprims at Etsy.

They are fabric, dyed and painted with moss and real branches for stems. I COULD NOT have made them for what she charged.....ready? 15.00 for all 6 pumpkins! Each one is about 6 inches tall or more. What a deal!

I had a new outfit every week in the 70's, but that damnable polyester stretch allowed us to "stretch" too!

New Art group for me

I am so very happy and feel so nurtured today!    I was invited to join the CIA (Collaborative Inspired Artists)    It is a fluid group that meets monthly with artists of various disciplines.   There was lots of collage, assemblage, some jewelry (WOW totally made from scratch metals and enamels, etc), some charcoal and painting.

I feel like a weight was lifted last night.   I have struggled with who am I as an artist, what can I create?     I feel that I have support to be critiqued and mentored in my quest to find who I really am artistically.

Thank you to those who invited me!

The work that was displayed was amazing. There is a show and tell each time.   Zowie, I better get my game on!    If you do not belong to a group, find one, it is such a grand experience.
